Prof Peter Kay FRCS

Peter Kay is a busy Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Wrightington Hospital Lancashire and Honorary Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery Manchester University and Honorary professor in Orthopaedics University of Central Lancashire. 

He has been President of the British Orthopaedic Association (2011), British Hip Society (2008) and British Orthopaedics Trainees Association (1992). He was the National Clinical Director for Musculoskeletal services for NHS England from 2013 to October 2019. He currently serves on the Council of The Royal College of Surgeons of England and Council of the Medical Defence Union

Clinically he specialises in hip and knee problems specialising Hip and Knee  replacement surgery, revision joint replacement surgery and knee arthroscopy. 

He trained on the North West training programme with fellowships in joint reconstruction and trauma in Stuttgart and joint replacement at Wrightington Hospital. Degrees in Medicine from Manchester University and Mathematics and Computing from the Open University. He is Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. he has been Director of Research, Clinical Director, Divisional Chairman for MSK and Associate Medical Director in his own Trust (Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS FT) which was HSJ Trust of the Year in 2014 and now recognised as one of the top 100 specialist hospitals in the world. He has 3 years experience as a full Trust Board Member up to a successful Foundation Trust application. He is the clinical lead for the Specialist Orthopaedic Hospital Alliance in the UK.

He has served on a number of Department of Health, NHS England and Public Heath England Committees nationally including Patient Reported Outcome Measures Steering Group (PROMS), Elective Care Transformation Board, Enhanced Recovery Steering Group (ERP), Fragility Fracture Board, and was the National Clinical Chair of the 18 Week Steering Group for Orthopaedics and MSK for 4 years (2008-2011). He was co-author of the first Musculoskeletal Framework Document from the DH (2008). He has sat on the NICE Guideline Development Group for Osteoarthritis. He has campaigned nationally and internationally for safe, effective and equitable musculoskeletal services that are patient centred.
